Ernest C. Pollard was born in Yunnan, China, on April 16, 1906. His undergraduate and postgraduate education was at Cambridge University where he received his Ph.D. in nuclear physics in 1932. Pollard began his research and teaching career in nuclear physics and, along with Ernest Rutherford and James Chadwick at Cambridge, made some of the first determinations of the radius of the nucleus.
